Miscellaneous Budget Audit

It's been about a week since writing a post, and since then, we have gone over our miscellaneous budget with 9 days remaining in February.  In addition to going over, we've also gone over our grocery budget by $27.59.  On what?  Food, obviously.  But food is a necessity.  Might be time to fiddle with the budgets so we can increase our grocery budget while decreasing miscellaneous because Eli eats sooo much!  His nickname at the church nursery: Food Monster.  He's the only toddler who uses the high chair to eat the whole hour while the other kids run around and play.

Anyway, this post is about our miscellaneous budget.  Although we've gone over, I'm still proud of the progress we have made so far.  If I have gone over our budget in the past with 9 days to go, I would have just given up and forget about our budget until the next month.  But since we have a plan and goal in place, I need to be honest with myself and continue to categorize and keep track of where our money is going.  So what I'm going to do below is list all of our miscellaneous transactions for February to see where the leaks are.  Here goes:

So our total miscellaneous budget for the month is $800.  As of today, we spent $925.80.  Over $125.80.

Just by knowing every single miscellaneous transaction shows us where all our money is going and where we need to rein things in.  Even though we're already over, I'm still encouraged and motivated that I'm keeping track.  Like I said before, I would have given up a long time ago and just wait until it resets in March.  There are some transactions we could have done without to stay under budget but things come up.  So what I'll do is cover the overages of miscellaneous and grocery with our tax refund and put the rest in savings.

Can't wait until it resets in March.  The challenge is we already have three birthdays we know of in March we need to account.  Plus, March is a long month so we're going to have to be extra frugal.

  1. Great post.. I know what you mean being motivated by just keeping track. I am on a similar journey and feel the same when I don’t hit my budget numbers exactly but still feel so good that I am tracking everything and can see where to adjust. It has been four months since I used a credit card and that in itself keeps me looking up:-)

    1. Thanks, mmpaul2. It's weird though. Today, I feel like giving up and just paying my required monthly payments and just save the rest.

  2. that $80 wasn't for facial products..it was for my prenatal vitamins. haha...i think that $100+ surplus in spending was due to your winter coat and my lotion, for the bulk of it - in terms of unnecessary spending for the month. i think things like eating out once in a while should be expected as we both work and are tired at the end of the day.

and eli does not sit in that high chair the entire hour! he does run around and play also. :)

    nice posts.
